🔒 We Updated Our Privacy Policy (And Why You Should Actually Care)

Two paths for building reward apps: FreeCash's shortcut led to an App Store ban, while FarmCash is built to last with fraud prevention and transparency

We updated our privacy policy today. And normally, this is probably the most boring topic you could imagine. Privacy policies are the digital equivalent of terms and conditions nobody reads—until something goes horribly wrong.

But here's the thing: we're not even live yet. FarmCash is still in closed alpha. We could have launched with generic boilerplate language and updated it later, like most apps do.

Instead, we're doing this now. On purpose. Before anyone downloads the app. Before we process a single payout. Before there's any pressure to "clarify" things after a scandal.

Why? Because of what just happened to FreeCash.

The FreeCash Data Confusion

If you read our FreeCash ban analysis, you know the App Store drama: TechCrunch alleged FreeCash harvested sensitive user data (race, religion, health status, sexual orientation) without consent. FreeCash denied it. The truth is still murky.

But one thing became crystal clear in the aftermath: Nobody—not users, not journalists, not even some industry insiders—understood where survey data actually goes.

Here's the confusion that emerged:

  • Users thought: "I answered a survey in FreeCash. Does FreeCash have my data?"
  • TechCrunch thought: "FreeCash collected sensitive data without consent."
  • FreeCash said: "We don't store survey responses. That data goes to third-party survey providers."
  • The industry knows: Third-party surveys are standard. But we've never clearly explained it to users.

That confusion? That's on us. Not just FreeCash—the entire reward app industry. We've operated on an assumption that users understand the difference between first-party and third-party data collection. They don't. And they shouldn't have to guess.

So let me explain it clearly. Right now. Before FarmCash processes a single survey.

First-Party vs Third-Party Survey Data (In Plain English)

Reward apps have two types of survey data collection. The difference matters enormously.

First-Party Surveys (FarmCash Owns This Data)

Sometimes, we might ask you questions directly. Things like:

  • "What's your favorite type of crop to plant?"
  • "How often do you play mobile games?"
  • "What would make FarmCash better?"

This is first-party data. We ask. You answer. We store it. We control it.

What We Do With First-Party Survey Data:

  • ✅ Use it to improve FarmCash (features, UX, game balance)
  • ✅ Anonymize and aggregate for product insights
  • ✅ Keep it secure in our database (Supabase, encrypted)
  • ❌ NEVER share with advertisers or third parties without your explicit consent

Important promise: If we ever monetize first-party survey data (selling aggregated insights), you'll know about it in advance. And we're exploring ways to actually pay Farmers for renting out their data to third parties—and only with their permission first. As with everything FarmCash: if we profit, you profit. More on that vision later.

Third-Party Surveys (Advertisers Own This Data)

Most reward app surveys come from external companies like Nielsen, Cint, Dynata, or market research firms. These are the surveys that ask:

  • "How much do you spend on groceries monthly?"
  • "What brands of cereal do you buy?"
  • "Do you have diabetes?" (health surveys pay more because they're valuable to pharmaceutical researchers)

This is third-party data. You answer. The survey provider receives your responses. FarmCash never sees your answers.

What FarmCash Sees From Third-Party Surveys:

  • ✅ You completed Survey ID #12345
  • ✅ Survey provider confirmed completion
  • ✅ You earned 150 seeds
  • ❌ NEVER your actual survey responses
  • ❌ NEVER the sensitive data you provided

Think of it like this: FarmCash is the bulletin board where survey jobs are posted. You walk over to the survey company's booth, complete their form, and they pay you directly (through us). We see that you finished the job. We don't see what you wrote on the form.

The survey company has their own privacy policy. Their own data practices. Their own compliance requirements. That's on them, not us.

What Data Does FarmCash Actually Collect?

Let's be transparent about the standard data we do collect:

Marketing & Product Data

  • How you found FarmCash (referral link, ad campaign, organic search)
  • Which features you use (crops planted, jobs completed, time in app)
  • Device information (phone model, OS version, screen size for UX optimization)

Anti-Fraud Protection

  • IP address (to detect multi-accounting and VPN abuse)
  • Device fingerprinting (to prevent fake accounts)
  • Behavioral patterns (abnormal activity flags for review)

Location Data

  • Approximate location (city/state level, not GPS coordinates)
  • Used to show relevant job offers and comply with geographic restrictions

Why we collect this: To make FarmCash work, keep bad actors out, and improve the product. Standard stuff for any mobile app. Nothing sketchy.

Why This Matters Now

Here's the critical difference between FarmCash and the FreeCash situation:

FreeCash clarified their data practices after allegations surfaced. Reactive transparency looks like damage control—even when it's genuine.

FarmCash is clarifying data practices before public launch. Proactive transparency builds trust.

We're establishing clear guardrails now because once you have millions of users, it's too late to retroactively explain "oh by the way, here's how survey data works." That's when headlines like "app harvests sensitive data" get written—even if technically inaccurate.

The Long-Term Vision: Data You Control, Income You Earn

Most reward apps treat your data as their asset. You answer surveys, they aggregate responses, they sell insights to brands, they keep the profit.

We're exploring a different model.

What if you controlled your first-party FarmCash data? What if you could opt into renting it out to researchers, marketers, or data brokers—and get paid directly for it?

Imagine:

  • FarmCash collects your gameplay preferences, purchasing habits, app usage patterns
  • A market research firm wants access to anonymized data from "mobile gamers aged 25-35 in the US"
  • You opt in. They pay. You earn monthly passive income.

No secret harvesting. No backroom deals. Just transparent data monetization where you're the one getting paid.

This is still exploratory. We're not launching this feature soon—probably late 2026 at the earliest. But we're building the infrastructure now to make it possible. Because as with everything FarmCash: if we profit, you profit.

Read the Full Policy (Seriously)

We've designed our Privacy Policy to be readable. It's written in plain English, not legalese. We've added info boxes, examples, and clear distinctions between first-party and third-party data practices.

Key sections to check out:

  • Section 2.6: Survey Data (First-Party vs Third-Party)
  • Section 3.5: Marketing and Personalization
  • Section 4.1: How We Share Your Information

Most people won't read it. But if you're the type who actually cares about where your data goes, give it a skim. It's surprisingly straightforward.

Transparency Matters

The reward app industry has a trust problem. Not because most apps are malicious, but because we've operated in the shadows for too long. Users don't understand how the money flows. They don't know who owns their data. And when scandals hit—real or exaggerated—everyone looks guilty.

We're building FarmCash differently. Not perfectly. Not without mistakes. But with a commitment to transparency from day one.

This privacy policy update? It's step one.
